Member of the Sixth and Seventh Term Senate

Born on 18th February 1955 in Tarnów.
In 1980, graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automation, Information Technology and Electronics at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Crakow. In 1987, received the doctoral degree, in 1999 – degree of doctor habilitated and in 2002 – scientific title of professor.
Since 1980 works at AGH University of Science and Technology, presently as full professor of information processing and electronics; head of the Reconfigurable Computing Systems Group. Since 2004 – director of Cyfronet Academic Computer Centre. Since 2006 – chairman of the board of PIONIER – Polski Internet Optyczny Consortium.
Has been associated with the town of Tarnów since 1980, where he conducted research in the field of microprocessor drivers and implemented his findings at TAMEL Electric Motor Factory in Tarnów.
Between 1998 and 2002 – adviser to the Prime Minister on "education and upbringing of the young generation".
Has been in charge of numerous research projects funded via grants from the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the National Centre for Research and Development, and the National Science Centre. Author of 7 scientific books, more than 200 articles and papers, and over 30 implementations. Reviewer for several prestigious international publications. Recipient of many prizes for scientific and educational achievements, including the Science and Higher Education Minister's Awards.
Has been involved with youth education for more than 30 years. Was among the founders of the Polish independent (i.e. non-communist) scouting movement in 1980, achieved primarily via the network of "Andrzej Małkowski" Scouting Instructor Centres (KIHAM). During the martial law period and thereafter, was active in the leadership of the illegal Ruch Harcerski Rzeczypospolitej (Scouting Movement of the Polish Republic) and, as a result, fell victim of the communist regime oppression. Co-organizer and, in 2004–2006, chairman of Związek Harcerstwa Rzeczypospolitej (Scouting Union of the Polish Republic). Chancellor of the Committee of the Honorary Cross of the Scouting Union of the Polish Republic.
Author of numerous articles and reports on education and on the situation of children and youth. Co-author of “Raport o sytuacji polskich rodzin” (Report on the Situation of the Polish Family) and “Program polityki prorodzinnej państwa” (State Pro-Family Policy Program).
Chairman of Tarnów Scientific Society. Member of the Polish Information Processing Society, EUROMICRO (The European Organization for Information and Microelectronics), IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and IEEE – Computer Society. Member of the Convention for establishing the Academy of Tarnów.
In 1990, for his endeavors on behalf of Poland's independence, received the Cross of the Officer of the Order of Poland Restored from Polish president in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski.
Member of the Solidarity Trade Union.
In the Sixth and Seventh Term Senate was chairman of the Science, Education and Sports Committee. In the Sixth Term Senate member of the Emigration Affairs and Contacts with Poles Abroad Committee, in the Seventh Term – member of the Culture and Media Committee.
No political party affiliation.
Married, has three children.
