Born on 16th February 1929 in Szopienice.
In 1954 he graduated from the Faculty of Film Directing at the Film School in Lodz (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Filmowa w Łodzi).
In 1959 he made his debut with the “Krzyż Walecznych” movie. He has directed more than 20 feature movies (e.g. “Nikt nie woła”, “Ludzie z pociągu”, “Sól ziemi czarnej”, “Perła w koronie”, “Paciorki jednego różańca”, “Śmierć jak kromka chleba”, “Zawrócony”, “Pułkownik Kwiatkowski”). He has also directed a number of performances for Teatr Telewizji (a television theatre) (“Opowieści Hollywoodu”, “Do piachu”, “Emigranci”, “Kartoteka rozrzucona”, “Wielebni”). He has also worked in theatres, e.g. in Narodowy Stary Teatr (National Old Theatre) in Cracow and in Teatr Narodowy (National Theatre) in Warsaw, where he directed Tadeusz Różewicz plays: “Kartoteka”, “Spaghetti i miecz”, “Na czworakach”.
In 1972 he established the “Silesia” film team in Katowice and was its art chief until 1978. Between 1981 and 1983 he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in Katowice, and from 1985 to 1991 he delivered lectures on directing at the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Cracow. Since 1987 he was the chief film director, and from 1990 until 1991 – the chief of the TVP (Polish State TV Broadcaster) branch in Katowice. Between 2000 and 2004 he held the position of the chief of the TVP branch in Cracow.
In 1981 he was the chairman of the Liaison Committee of the Creative and Scientific Communities. He was interned under the martial law in the same year.
He is a journalist and writes about film and the problems of Silesia. He published “Klapsy i ścinki”, “Mój alfabet filmowy i nie tylko”, and in 2010 he made his debut as a novelist with his book entitled “Piąta strona świata”.
He has received numerous awards and distinctions. In 2009, during the 34th Gdynia Film Festival, he was awarded Platinum Lions for his artistic achievements.
He is a member of the Polish Filmmakers Association and the ZAiKS Authors’ Association.
In the Fourth Term Senate he worked in the Science and National Education Committee and the Emigration and Poles Abroad Committee. In the Fifth Term Senate he was a member of Culture and Media Committee. In the Sixth Term Senate he was a member of Culture and Media Committee and the Science, Education and Sport Committee. In the Sixth Term Sejm he was a deputy chairman of the National and Ethnic Minorities Committee, and he worked in the Culture and Media Committee.
